The Mariners’ Museum and Park connects people to the world’s waters because that is how we are connected to one another.
As stewards of one of the world’s most extensive maritime collections, The Mariners’ Museum and Park is committed to the preservation and conservation of more than 32,000 objects and several million library and archive materials. Designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum, the Museum provides access to the collection through exhibitions, educational programs, loans, publications, and online media. The 550-acre Mariners’ Park is home to the 167-acre Mariners’ Lake, 5-mile Noland Trail, iconic Lions Bridge, and our “living collection”: the forest, water, and wildlife that we proudly steward, as well.
The Museum’s signature $1 admission price is a symbol - it represents our mission and purpose, and serves as a reminder that through our shared connection to the world’s waters, we are ONE city, ONE region, ONE nation and ONE world.

Uncertain of what they had found or what its value might be, they called in two nautical archaeologists-Warren Riess and Sheli Smith-to direct the excavation and analysis of the ship’s remains. As it turned out, the mystery ship’s age and type meant that its careful study would help answer some important questions about the commerce and transportation of an earlier era of American history. The Mariners' Park Fall Festival happening November 4th!
I live no where near the ocean and will never sail in my life. However, I was curious about it and your video is informative and entertaining. Thank you for this. You seriously made my morning. Cheers from Texas!
Wow! We are SO glad to hear that this video has been a connecting point to the water for you. We hope you'll stay connected and check out more videos on the channel.
Another lecture in a long series of most excellent presentations.
We’re so glad to hear that you enjoyed this lecture! Do you have a favorite topic that we’ve touched on?
@@TheMarinersMuseum I enjoy any maritime-related topic but the topics covered by your lecturers have been enjoyable. Let me know when whaling might be covered, especially New Bedford, Edgartown, and Nantucket. I used to spend my summers on Martha’s Vineyard and the general aviation airport (Katama Airpark) had a jawbone from a whale at the entrance.
We're so glad to hear that! It sounds like you have a wonderful, lifelong connection to the water! We'll be on the lookout - we do have a number of videos that touch on subject matter from around New England but not whaling specifically at this time.
Is the man that built this boat still alive? I sure would like to talk to him. Thanks for any help. ✝️🙏❤🇺🇸
Unfortunately he passed away several years ago
I really appreciate videos like this, probably the 4th time I’ve watched this.
just wondering out loud … could it be built from laminated wood from the original blueprints , instead of steel or wrought iron ???
Great question! Though it looks like wood, we know from sample analysis and microscopic imaging that these objects are wrought iron. Wood would have deteriorated on the ocean floor in these conditions. This type of corrosion is standard for wrought iron and is known as "fibrous wrought iron". Thanks for watching!
Nice video!👌
So glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check back each month for more!
Another great presentation thank you. Loving my books!
We’re so glad to hear it! This sure was an interesting one. What book has been your favorite?
Another great presentation
An interesting presentation.
We're so glad to hear you enjoyed it!
The earthworks of fort walker certainly still exist
Wasn't the diving plane picture actually a film issue?
great presentation
We're so glad you enjoyed it! Have you watched more of our presentations?
This was cool my mother's last name was Haraden so I had heard about Jonathan and Nathaniel Haraden many years ago.
What a neat connection! We're glad you enjoyed the presentation!
Very cool production. Alot of hard work. Nuclear cruisers had a special place during the 70s and 80s, and it was an honor to be part of that history. Hotb!!
We are glad you enjoyed the video and are excited to make things like this accessible to mariner's all around the world.
Do you have video of the USS Virginia CGN 38?
Hi there, we weren’t able to find any footage of USS Virginia (CGN 38) in the collection, thanks for your interest! If you’d like to explore further you can find many of our objects and archives in our online catalog: catalogs.Mariners Museum.org
15 March 1986 I had just turned 11 years old and my Dad brought me & my little brother to Newport News Shipbuilding in order to watch the launch of the USS Newport News. Needless to say that launch was watched by thousands upon thousands of people given the namesake of the ship itself and little did I realize that in 1999 I would end up assigned IDC (independent duty corpsman) on board USS Newport News (SSN-750) I was the “baby doc” meaning the lowest ranking corpsman. Medical department consisted of me and a very salty, Senior Chief who taught me more than I could ever imagine all of which would be needed after the towers fell and I added NEC HM-8404 to my Page 4. Greenside!!!“Devil Doc” remains my most valued moniker and I doubt anything will ever surpass it given the way you get that particular moniker in the first place. Had my grandfather not served and my father not served as well as realizing the importance of exposing his kids to the might that is the United States Navy brought together by the men and women of Newport News shipbuilding. I believe we saw the launch of the USS Buffalo as well. Pretty sure I still have the commemorative coins somewhere. Semper Fi, Semper Fortis & Go Navy!!!!
Wow what a fantastic connection and experience! We’re grateful to you for sharing.
Are there any Actual pictures ( Daguerreotype etc...) of the CSS Virginia ? I have searched high & low, with no results . One would think that if there are pictures of the USS Monitor, there would be some of the CSS Virginia ......Anyone ?
Hi there, great question! We consulted with our archivists and to our knowledge there are unfortunately none in existence. Many "photographs" that you might find are photographs of engravings that were made.
@@TheMarinersMuseum Thank you for that information. Again , with the Ironclads being such revolutionary gun platforms of that era , someone would’ve wanted to record / preserve the CSS Virginia’s history. I can only imagine, how many people actually witnessed the Battle of Hampton roads , the aftermath & these two Ironclads returning to their home ports . And yet , no one thought of getting it all on photographs of any kind .
When yousay the virgina has sloped armor at 36degrees is that from vertical or from horozontal please?
Great question. Imagine a right angle triangle in which the hypotenuse is the deck. The stated angle of the armor would be the angle between the hypotenuse and the adjacent sides of the triangle. So you are measuring the angle from the deck, and not from the top of the casemate.
It was rodman who cast cast iron guns around inner tubes cooled With water not parrot who dalgren barrowed technique from
She’s BACK! This was fascinating to watch. I will be revisiting it often and I’m glad to see you continuing to share your knowledge and passion. You help make art more “approachable” to me.
We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed Kyra’s talk!
Yaaaay! Nice to get a long presentation. Maybe Beyond the Frame will live on. Now to get some coffee and biscuits while I enjoy this!
Pensé que era música, no me gusta 😒
Is this the update for the Monitor? I’m still waiting for newer videos regarding the Monitor!
This is a Monitor legacy program highlighting some of the fascinating stories of the ship. We'll have a new video up before the end of the month, stay tuned!
@@TheMarinersMuseum thank you.
Cudjoe is a name given to one of the sons of the ewe tribes… I would ask an elder from the ewe tribe who were part of the old OYO empire. And I presume the African slave masters could not write the names of the slaves hence they just called them by the town they were captured. So the white slavers who later bought them wrote names given to them by the black slavers. Also remember that the slavers were given some concoctions to drink that made them unable to remember their past. There’s a well they were made to drink from before embarking on their journey.
Good talk, very interesting, thank you
We’re so glad you enjoyed it! Have you watched some of our other programs before?
@@TheMarinersMuseum Yes I stumbled upon them during the covid lockdown and have been watching since then. I hope to visit your museum in person some day.
We went for the first time earlier in the year. Well worth it and neat seeing a presentation in person!

So glad you enjoyed!
Wasn't US Army Lt Hardiman S Putnam with USN Lt John Worden on this mission? Putnam was held in Montgomery under the same orders from CSA AG Benjamin but was released in a negotiation of some description.
Amazing museum!
Thank you so much! Do you have a favorite part of the Museum?
Wow - getting to work on the Monitor - Wow!
Right? We're so honored to be the caretakers and stewards of this iconic ship!
Incredible, I learned so much about one of my favorite civil war campaigns.
We’re so glad you learned a lot! Have you watched some of our programs before?
Weird amount of complaining in the comments. Enjoy the lecture or not, but strange whines. "This guy" is actually fun to speak with in person. Doesn't mean i agree 100%.
Beautiful city . Compare with the filthy dump that is SF today.
Very interesting as always. Great presentation
Interesting story that could have been excellent had a well-edited script been written.
Slight correction, the Omani moved their capital from Mombasa to Zanzibar not from Oman. Oman is home!!!!
I love that we find money to preserve our history. However this is an invention to kill and mame. The amount of money spent not only to create this then preserve it is wasted. Perhaps we actually learn from history and put the budget into preserving life we wouldn't have the need for the items that destroy life! The annual budget for our military complex could provide every single American citizen 100,000 a year. Think about that.
I enjoyed your lecture. Point of detail; Tunis Augustus Macdonough Craven, Commander, USS Tecumseh, is the proper name for my great granduncle. There is no "hugh" in his middle name.
This is my favorite painting in the museum.
It truly is a spectacular piece, we're so glad to hear that it's a special one for you! Have you watched more of the series?
@@TheMarinersMuseum yes, I have watched a few videos in the series. I really enjoy the art, some of these I have not seen on display.
@@chameleone79 We’re so glad to hear you enjoy the art! Many of these works are in storage and not currently on display, so Beyond the Frame allows viewers to get a sneak peak behind the scenes!

Thank you! We're so glad you find our programs engaging and inspiring!
Great presentation. Amazing
This needs to be shown in EVERY high school history class. Most students nowadays are not taught our nation's history. God bless you sir, and keep up the good work.
The men and women of the Silent Service are a very special breed. They have been involved in some of the most secret missions, under the most dangerous circumstances and they don't speak a word unless authorized. No Seal Team 6 bravado, just quietly and efficiently doing their jobs. They are true hero's in every sense of the word.
Great presentation thank you.
Thank you Nathan! We're so glad to see you enjoying our programs and we're glad to have you here!
